Copyright, Muted Audio, and Clips: A Practical 2026 Refresher for Creators

Why 15 seconds is not a rule, what platforms actually do, and how to build a go-to music stack you will not yank at 2 a.m.

Platforms are copyright hosts with automated matching. "Fair use" is a legal defence, not a feature flag in the uploader. If you live off clips, buy once-cleared music beds, use platform sound libraries, or work from stems you have rights to. Otherwise plan for takedowns and revenue routing you did not expect.

When speech matters more than music

Podcast and talk clips: duck music under -18 LUFS, or cut to voice-only. The clip still works; the rights headache often does not.

Pro tip

If you re-cut long-form, re-level music after any trim — loudness can drift between segments.
